When weighing backup power options, you’ll often choose between solar generators and gas generators. Each has its pros and cons based on factors like cost, reliability, and environmental impact.

Solar generators harness the power of the sun to create electricity, making them an eco-friendly option. They are typically silent and require low maintenance, but their output depends on sunlight availability, which can vary based on location and weather conditions.

On the other hand, gas generators use fuel to produce electricity, providing consistent power output regardless of the weather. However, they emit pollutants, make noise, and require more maintenance.

Both solar and gas generators have their unique features, but choosing the ideal solution for your needs depends on multiple factors. Analyzing cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and eco-friendliness can help you make an informed decision.

Key Takeaways

Solar generators are eco-friendly and low-maintenance, but their power output depends on sunlight.

Gas generators provide consistent power output but may have a higher ecological footprint.

Analyzing cost, efficiency, and environmental impact can help determine the best backup power option for your needs.

Solar Generators

Basics of Solar Generators

Solar generators harness the sun to generate electricity using solar panels that convert sunlight into electrical energy stored in batteries.

A solar genny typically consists of solar panels, batteries, a charge controller, and an inverter to convert the stored DC energy into AC power, the type of electricity your devices use.

To understand how solar-powered generators work, it’s essential to know each component’s function and their role in the overall system.

Types of Solar Generators

There are two primary types of solar generators: portable solar generators and stationary solar generators.

Portable solar generators are compact and lightweight, making them ideal for camping trips, outdoor events, and emergencies. They usually have smaller solar panels and battery storage capacities so they can power smaller devices for shorter periods.

Stationary solar generators are permanent installations that are commonly used as backup power sources for homes and businesses. These generators have larger solar panels and storage capacity, providing more extended power support for larger appliances.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Generators

Advantages

Disadvantages

Environmentally friendly

Lower power outputs compared to gas generators

Produce clean, renewable energy

Dependence on sunlight

Reduce carbon footprint and reliance on fossil fuels

Less effective on cloudy days or during nighttime

Quiet operation

May not meet specific power needs for larger appliances

Don’t emit harmful fumes

Low operating costs, saving money in the long run

It’s essential to consider what can run using solar generation to determine if it meets your specific needs.

Gas Generators

Basics of Gas Generators

Gas generators are a common choice for providing backup power in case of emergencies, power outages, and natural disasters.

They use a combustion engine to convert fossil fuels, such as gasoline, diesel, propane, or natural gas, into mechanical energy.

This mechanical energy is then converted into electrical energy to power your appliances and devices. Gas-powered generators are popular because of their reliability and ease of use.

Types of Gas Generators

There are several types of gas generators, each with its advantages and fuel sources. The most common types are:

Gasoline generators: These run on regular gasoline and are typically more affordable. However, gasoline has a shorter shelf life and produces higher emissions.

Diesel generators: These offer greater fuel efficiency and longer engine life but can be more expensive and produce more noise.

Natural gas generators: These generators use natural gas, which is often hooked up to a gas line, making them more convenient and cost-effective. However, they may not be as portable as other options.

Propane generators: These are known for their clean emissions and longer fuel storage life but can be slightly less efficient than other types.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Gas Generators

Gas generators have both advantages and disadvantages, which you should consider when deciding on a backup power source:

Advantages:

Reliability: Gas generators are well-known for their reliable performance, allowing you to power your appliances and devices during emergencies.

Availability of fuel: Gasoline, diesel, propane, and natural gas are widely available, making it easy to refuel a gas generator when needed.

Disadvantages:

Maintenance: Gas generators require regular maintenance, such as oil changes and spark plug replacements, to keep them functioning properly.

Noise: Combustion engines can be noisy and may disturb you and your neighbors, especially during extended use.

Emissions: Gas-powered generators produce emissions that harm the environment and contribute to air pollution, especially those running on gasoline or diesel.

In conclusion, gas generators offer reliable backup power, but it’s important to weigh the pros and cons based on the fuel source and your specific needs.

Comparative Analysis: Solar vs Gas Generators

In terms of upfront cost, solar generators typically have a higher initial price than gas generators.

However, the long-term cost of solar generators is lower as they use sunlight, a free energy source, whereas gas generators require you to purchase fuel continually.

With the increasing efficiency and decrease in solar panel prices, solar generators become more cost-effective in the long run.

Power output is an important aspect of any generator, and gas generators, in general, provide higher power capacity compared to solar generators.

Gas generators are popular for their ability to provide backup power during power outages, but solar generators are catching up in capacity, making them a good alternative for activities like camping and off-grid power solutions.

When it comes to environmental impact, solar generators have the advantage as they produce no greenhouse gases or pollution, while gas generators emit carbon monoxide and other pollutants.

Additionally, solar generators are virtually noise-free, making them more convenient for residential areas or camping trips where a noisy gas generator can be disturbing.

Efficiency is another aspect to consider. Gas generators tend to be less efficient than solar generators, as they convert only a portion of their fuel into usable energy.

Solar, on the other hand, utilizes photovoltaic (PV) panels to convert sunlight directly into electricity with minimal energy loss.

Portability is a crucial factor for some users, and solar generators tend to be more compact and lightweight compared to gas generators. This feature makes them ideal for outdoor activities, where bringing a heavy and bulky gas generator might not be practical.

Moreover, solar generators are generally easier to operate and maintain, requiring no oil changes or tune-ups.

A key difference between the two is their power storage capacity. While gas generators can provide power instantly for short durations, solar generators need to recharge their batteries by exposure to sunlight.

This limitation could be an issue if you need backup power during an extended power outage on days with minimal sunlight.

To further examine the pros and cons between portable power stations and traditional generators, you can refer to this article on portable power stations vs generators.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

Solar is a renewable and sustainable energy source, harnessing the sun’s energy to generate electricity without causing significant harm to the environment.

By using solar power, you are contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change.

On the other hand, gas generators rely on the burning of fossil fuels to generate power. This process produces harmful emissions, including carbon monoxide and other polluting substances.

These emissions contribute significantly to air pollution, affecting human health and exacerbating the effects of climate change. Moreover, fossil fuels are a finite resource, making gas generators less sustainable than solar options in the long term.

The efficiency of solar and gas generators also plays a role in their environmental impact. Solar panels convert sunlight into usable energy at a rate of around 15-20%. This conversion rate may be lower than gas generators, but the production of solar power has a far smaller carbon footprint.

As solar panel technology continues to improve, their efficiency and competitiveness with gas generators will continue to grow.

Lastly, regarding land use and water consumption, solar power infrastructure has some environmental trade-offs.

Large-scale solar power plants can require significant land area for panel installations, potentially displacing natural habitats or competing with agricultural land.

However, implementing rooftop solar panels on homes and businesses significantly reduces land use concerns. In contrast to gas generators, solar power systems use minimal water during operation, making them more environmentally friendly concerning water resources.

In summary, solar power is the greener and more sustainable choice for electricity generation, helping reduce emissions and providing a cleaner energy solution.

Frequently Asked

How do the running costs of solar generators and gas generators differ?

Solar generators have lower running costs as they rely on sunlight, a free energy source. Once installed, you only need to maintain the panels and battery system. Gas generators, on the other hand, require fuel, oil changes, and maintenance, which can add up over time. Solar panels are cost-effective in the long run, while gas generators might have a lower upfront cost but higher ongoing expenses.

How portable and convenient are solar generators compared to gas generators?

Solar generators are generally more portable and convenient due to their silent operation and lack of emissions. They are ideal for camping, outdoor events, or residential use. However, their performance can be affected by weather and location. Gas generators are typically heavier and noisier but can provide continuous power regardless of external factors. Your choice should depend on your intended use and priorities, such as portability or consistent power supply.

What is the typical lifespan of a solar generator versus a gas generator?

Solar generators have a longer lifespan, with solar panels lasting up to 25 years and batteries around 10 years. They require minimal maintenance and degrade slowly over time. Gas generators, in contrast, vary in lifespan depending on the model and usage. Typically, gas generators have a significantly shorter lifespan, with some lasting around 2,000 to 3,000 hours of use. Proper maintenance is crucial to maximize the lifespan of both types of generators.

Can a dual solar and gas generator system provide the benefits of both options?

Yes, a hybrid solar and gas generator system can offer the advantages of both options. This setup allows you to harness clean and free solar energy while also having a reliable gas generator as a backup for continuous power supply during extended periods of low sunlight or emergencies. By combining the two, you can enjoy the cost savings and environmental benefits of solar while maintaining the reliability of a gas generator.

The average home refrigerator uses 350-780 watts. So, when selecting a solar generator to run a fridge and freezer, it must be sized accordingly.

The last thing you want is for the cooling appliance’s contents to deteriorate because of insufficient electrical power.

Solar generators must be sized not only for the fridge and freezers’ regular running wattage but also for the surge power requirements.

Three elements to ensure a solar generator is correctly sized are the inverter, battery, and solar panels.

You should always assume that bad weather and other factors will affect the solar generator and how long it will need to produce power on battery capacity alone.

Refrigerator & Freezer Power Requirements

Part of the process that causes a fridge to cool down involves compressing and depressurizing refrigerant. Fridges and freezers use induction motors for this purpose.

Induction motors consume two levels of power (measured in watts):

The power (watts) that are used for the startup or surge power.

The power (watts) that are used for standard running power.

Surge – Starting Power

When an AC induction motor is at rest and then switched on, it draws a very high momentary current surge.

As the AC induction motor is started, a magnetic field is created in the stator. In turn, this creates a magnetic field in the rotor.

The magnetic fields created in the stator and rotor interact and generate torque that causes the motor to turn.

The biggest inrush current level is developed during the first half of the motor operation cycle. It can be as high as 10 times the full-load current required by the motor. After half a turn, the current is reduced to half this value and finally to the everyday running power.

The Watts Used For Normal Running Power

As the motor begins to speed up, the current it draws reduces until it operates at the rated operating speed. The surge power stops and the standard running power is consumed.

Star Rating

To manage the consumption of several electrical appliances used in the home and businesses, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy have issued star rating requirements.

The intent is that by conforming to this standard, electrical appliances’ impact on the environment is reduced, and the consumer achieves financial savings.

To qualify for a star rating, refrigerators must demonstrate a 15% improvement in efficiency standards compared to the minimum federal efficiency standard. This is an important requirement for fridges connected to a solar generator.

Calculating Solar Generator Size

To calculate the size of the three main components of a solar system, the following should be accounted for.

But before we begin, I suggest you keep in mind the power requirements of your air conditioner on top of refrigeration.

Inverter Power

The inverter is the component most affected by the regular and surge power requirements. The inverter must have sufficient capacity to run the fridge and freezer at the start and afterward.

In addition to providing the normal running power capacity, it must also have sufficient power in reserve to cope with the current to manage the surge power.

The good news is that most solar generators have a surge capacity that is double the regular output.

This means an inverter producing 2kW of power can surge to 4kW.

Battery Capacity

The solar generator draws current from the battery to power the inverter. There are two considerations in this regard.

Is The Battery Large Enough?

Batteries are rated according to the number of kilowatts they can produce in an hour (kWhs). A 5.1kWh battery could run a fridge that consumes 0.5kW for 10 hours and 12 minutes.

The surge power consumption happens so quickly that it does not have a meaningful impact on the battery capacity.

Battery Depth Of Discharge Percentage

Different battery technologies permit varying depth of discharge percentages. If the battery is discharged to below this value long term, the damage will be caused to the battery.

Acceptable discharge percentages per battery type are shown below.

Lead Acid, AGM, and Gel Batteries – Discharge to 50%.

Lithium-ion batteries – Discharge to 15%

Red-Ox Flow Batteries – Discharge to 0%

Solar Panel Ratings

The solar panel’s sizes (the amount of current they can generate) are calculated to provide the power consumption needed at the peak sun hours at the location.

Peak sun hours are when the solar irradiance (the sun’s intensity) averages 1,000 watts per square meter. Peak sun hours vary by location and season.

If sized correctly, the panels will simultaneously charge the battery and run the fridge and freezer.

To understand this, the following example uses the assumptions listed below.

There are 5 hours and forty-eight minutes (5.8 hours) of peak sun hours.

Three 520-watt solar panels are used.

The fridge consumes 0.5kW per hour.

The battery has a capacity of 5.1kWh.

The solar panels will produce just over 9 kW of power during the peak sun hours (5.8 hours of sun X 0.520kW X 3 Panels = 9.048 kW.)

The panels will also produce less before and after peak sun hours. In this example, we assume an additional 2 kW are produced during the 1.5 hours on either side of peak sun hours.

The solar panels, therefore, produce 11.048kW (9.048 plus 2.00) per day.

During the 8.8 hours of sunlight (5.8 peak sun hours plus 3 hours extra), the fridge will consume 4.4 kW (8.8 hours X 0.5 kW).

The solar panels produce 11.048 kW, of which the fridge will consume 4.4 kW. This leaves 6.6kW to charge the battery to a full state.

The battery only needs 5.1KWh, so the additional 1.6kW will be used by other consumables or discarded by the MPPT charge controller in the inverter.

This means a full charge is available to run the fridge through the night.

Additional Factors To Consider

There are other factors that you need to take into account.

Back-Up Power

Unfortunately, the sun does not always cooperate, and there are many days when peak sun hours are not achieved.

This may be due to bad weather, pollution, or the season when peak sun hours are reduced.

To compensate for this, there are three possible solutions:

Install additional batteries to provide power for longer periods.

Install a gas-powered backup generator.

Remain connected to the electrical grid (grid-tied.)

Climate And Temperature Conditions

The climate and temperature conditions have a significant impact on solar systems.

The Battery

The colder a battery gets, the less charge it can retain. Lithium batteries use chemical reactions to generate electrical currents. Extreme cold can slow these reactions down or even prevent them from occurring.

This will impact how many batteries you choose to deploy in your situation.

Solar Panels

Solar panel efficiencies are affected as the temperature increases. It means that the solar panels’ efficiency will be compromised in hot climates with little ventilation.

Recommended Solar Generator Models

The following factors will determine the solar generator that you choose:

The amount of current that electrical consumers draw on the circuit.

The geographical location.

The average temperatures.

The general weather conditions and amount of sun available.

My recommendations are divided into different categories of solar generators. For all of them in one place, check out my list of the best portable solar generators.

High Power Solar Generators

In the high-power category, I recommend the EcoFlow DELTA Pro. This powerful device generates 3.4kWh of power, increasing to 7.2kWh when a surge is called for.

It has all the necessary AC and DC outlets.

A level 2 EV charger can charge it and will accept a simultaneous charge from an AC power outlet and solar panels.

Impressively, it can be linked to another unit and up to four batteries, at which point it is capable of generating 256kWh.

The unit (with installed battery) sells for $3,299.00.

Best Mid-Range Solar Generator

My recommendation for the best mid-sized solar generator is the Bluetti AC200MAX.

The AC200MAX produces – a total of 2.2kWh, which it distributes through 6 outlets. It also provides DC outputs across several different plug types. It has a surge power rating of 4.6kWh.

It will recharge when connected to a simultaneous AC and Solar power charge in under 2 hours.

The unit sells for $1,859.00.

Portable Solar Generator

Our recommendation is the fully portable Bluetti AC60 weighs 18.9 lbs. (8.6 kg.)

It produces 600 W (surge 1.2kW) and can be extended to 2,015 when an additional battery is connected.

The unit is completely water, dust, and weather-tight.

The model has only just been announced, and prices have not yet been disclosed; however, we estimate it will sell for approximately $500.00

Key Takeaways

Solar generators that have been sized correctly can run a whole range of appliances and devices and keep critical equipment operational through blackouts.

1️⃣ Refrigerators and freezers consume a substantially higher power level when starting, after which they stay running using fewer watts.

2️⃣ It is vital that the solar generator is sized correctly and that the battery, inverter, and solar panels are sufficient for the task at hand.

3️⃣ When choosing a solar generator, it is also important that the system sizing considers disruptions in solar energy caused by the time of day, bad weather, pollution, or climatic conditions.

Generally speaking, a central air conditioner will consume between 3000 and 3500 watts per hour. Beyond that, they draw 3 – 4 times more power each time the compressor starts.

They are generally more suited to running off a fully installed solar setup with substantial battery capacity.

It is difficult to run air cons overnight due to the high power consumption and need for a powerful battery installation.

Smaller units (in an RV) can be run successfully, although briefly, with portable solar-powered generators.

Air conditioners and fridge-freezers are some of the most difficult appliances to run off a solar-powered generator. The power they consume is generally higher than most other appliances.

Types Of Solar-Powered Generators

There are three broad categories of solar-powered generators:

Solar power permanently installed backup generators.

Partially portable solar-powered generators.

Fully portable solar-powered camping generators.

Solar Power Permanently Installed Backup Generators

Solar generators permanently installed at a location can be a partial or full backup to the main utility-generated electrical power supply.

These devices will be activated (either automatically or manually), and they will generate an alternate power source that acts as a substitute for the conventional utility power supply.

As a full backup, they are sized to replace all the power at the premises. This means that they can provide the total power needs of the building.

Partially Portable Solar Powered Generators

This category can produce high power output and, although heavy, can be moved around.

Which means they can be used offsite (albeit in a controlled environment). They can also be used as an RV’s power supply, meaning the RV does not need to be connected to a mains power supply.

Fully Portable Solar Powered Camping Generators

These small, portable solar-powered generators are compact and lightweight.

Examples of fully portable solar-powered generators are the Bluetti AC60 or Jackery 500, which produce around 0.5kW and only weigh about 13 lbs. (6.04 kg).

These devices can power small electrical appliances such as lights, cooler boxes, and phone chargers but not air conditioners.

They make an excellent companion when low levels of virtually silent portable electrical power are needed.

Solar Powered Generator Power Outputs

Along with the different uses for solar power generators, there is also a wide selection of power levels that are produced.

These range from 0.5kW at the low end to 25kW for large solar generators linked together.

Examples of the varying levels of solar power generators are listed below.

Solar Generator

Inverter Power

Surge Power

Battery Power

Run AC

Jackery 500

500W

1,000W

518Wh

BLUETTI AC60

600W

1,200W

403Wh

BLUETTI AC200MAX

2,200W

4,600W

2,200Wh

Ecoflow Delta Max

2,400W

5,000W

2,400Wh

Bluetti AC300

3,000W

6,000W

3,000Wh

Ecoflow Delta Pro

3,600W

7,200W

3,600Wh

Bluetti AC300 Extended

6,000W

12,000W

24,576Wh

Ecoflow Delta Pro Extended

7,200W

14,400W

25,000Wh

Powering Air Conditioners With Solar Systems

Air conditioners are one of the most commonly used electrical home appliances in America and account for 12% of the power used in households across the US. The US Department Of Energy (DOE) states that air conditioners account for 6% of ALL electricity consumed in America.

Even though air conditioners consume large amounts of electricity, running one off a solar generator is possible.

The issues that you will need to consider as listed below.

Air-conditioners are high-consumption appliances and will require large batteries to run at night or in bad weather.

They require a “surge” current to start the compressor that can be three times more than the normal “running” consumption, which will dictate the size of the solar generator used.

There are three categories of household air conditioners used in private homes.

AC Solar Air Conditioners

AC (alternating current) units are the traditional choice for household air conditioners. The primary reason for this is that the power supply from the utilities is AC, and there has yet to be an incentive to explore other technologies.

The problem with AC air conditioners is that they are not an efficient electrical consumer.

The compressor is the component that uses the most energy in an air conditioner. The compressor’s motor generally runs on a direct current (DC).

This means the AC connecting to the main power supply passes through a rectifier that converts it to DC.

An AC air conditioner that runs off a solar system may convert the current twice (the DC from the solar panels is converted to AC and is then passed through the rectifier where it is covered back DC.

There are a few disadvantages to running AC Solar Air Conditioners of a solar system:

They need a large amount of current “surge” when the compressor starts.

Energy is lost when the current is converted to AC and back to DC.

They require substantial battery power to run when there is no sun.

DC Solar Air Conditioners

DC units eliminate the wasteful conversion from AC to DC.

The problem with running the air conditioner directly from the solar panels is that the current fluctuates during the day, particularly when there is cloud cover.

DC air conditioners overcome this by using MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking), stabilizing the current.

The advantages of a DC unit are as follows:

A DC air conditioner leaves the two AC/DC conversion steps out and uses the native DC directly from the solar panels.

Most DC inverters use a “soft start” technology that minimizes the “surge” current needed to activate the compressor.

DC units do not need an inverter between the solar panels and the system.

The disadvantages of a DC unit are listed below.

DC air conditioners need large-capacity battery storage

They generally cost more than AC-powered air conditioners

Hybrid Solar Air Conditioner

As the name implies, hybrid solar air conditioners can operate on DC or AC. This means that during the day, when there is plenty of sunlight, they can draw current from the solar generator. At night or when there is cloud cover, they can switch to AC and draw power from the utility.

Solar Generator Compatibility With Air Conditioners

Generally, a fully installed solar system is the optimal solution to run air conditioners. High-powered air conditioners use large amounts of electricity, which means solar systems with many solar panels and excess capacity from solar batteries are needed.

Despite this, it is possible to run air conditioners from a solar generator; however, the power requirements must be carefully considered.

Choosing the correct solar generator is essential. The typical power requirements of AC-powered solar air conditioners are listed below.

BTU Size

Current Type

Running Watts Required (kWh)

Initial Surge Watts Required

Number of hours 1 X 3kWh battery will run

5,000

AC

200W-500 kWh

1,000-1,500W

6 hours

7,000

AC

400W-700 kWh

1,400W-2,000W

4 hours

10,000

AC

500W-800 kWh

1,700W-2,200W

3 ¾ hours

13,500

AC

700W-1,500 kWh

2,500W-3,000W

2 hours

15,000

AC

800W-2,000 kWh

2,800W-3,500W

50 minutes

24,000

AC

1,200W-2,800 kWh

3,800W-4100W

45 minutes

10.000

DC

300 kWh

1,000W

10 hours

The size of the generator will be determined by the running watts and initial surge watts consumed by the air-con.

For example, an air-conditioner rated at 10,000 BTU will require a solar generator with the following capacities:

Normal running power – 0.8kW

Surge Power – 2.2kw

Night time running – 10 kWh batteries (8 hours)

The factors that will impact these values are as follows:

The air conditioner’s compressor generally runs 2-3 times every hour for 15-20 minutes.

Increasing the temperature setting reduces the running times and the power consumed.

The higher the ambient temperature, the more often the system will need to provide cooling air.

Setting Up And Running The System

The factors to consider when setting up a solar generator to run an air conditioner are listed below.

Before installing the system, first, answer the following questions:

Do you intend to run the system overnight? If the answer is yes, it is important to calculate the battery capacity you need to do this.

Calculate the number of solar panels (and the capacity) required to keep the battery charged and to run the system during the day.

Ensure the inverter is sized correctly and meets the air conditioner’s power requirement (for both running and surge power).

Installation

Installing a solar generator is very simple and only involves following the instructions issued with it.

Running The AC Unit

Always ensure the solar generator batteries are sufficiently charged before connecting and switching the air conditioning unit on.

Depending on the battery type, it can only be discharged (depth of discharge) to a certain level beyond which battery damage will occur.

Key Takeaways

Although not ideal, running air conditioners off a solar-powered generator is possible.

1⃣ The main consideration is the battery capacity included (or that it can be attached to) with the solar generators.

2⃣ Another consideration is the amount of surge power the air conditioner draws each time the compressor starts (2 -3 times per hour.)

3⃣ DC air conditioners are more expensive but draw less power and are therefore more suitable to being powered by solar generators.

Solar-powered generators are available at all large retail chains, manufacturers’ websites, and specialty solar outlets.

The technology has matured, and there are standards that most manufacturers comply with, making them safe and reliable to use.

As the power output increases with different solar generator models, so does the unit’s price and weight.

When buying a solar-powered generator, you need to consider the power output, the battery capacity, the device’s portability, and how much it costs. The top brands include Anker, Bluetti, EcoFlow, Goal Zero, Jackery, and Oupes.

Where To Buy Online?

There was a time when buying a solar-powered generator required specialized knowledge.

As the technology has settled down and is being standardized across the different brands, there is far less risk in buying from large online consumer stores.

The retailers with the best product ranges of solar-powered generators include the following:

Amazon

Walmart

BestBuy

Home Depot

Lowes

Menards

Most manufacturers offer online sales portals for their product range. This resource is helpful for discovering solar generators’ full details and specifications.

Where To Buy Offline?

If you want to visit the store and purchase the solar generator in person, you can do this at the following types of stores.

Home Improvement Stores

Home improvement stores like Home Depot, Lowes, and Menards provide stores around the country that stock solar generators and portable power stations.

Electronics and DIY Stores

Medium-sized electronics and DIY store chains will be able to offer you a choice of different makes while providing more personalized advice than is available from large national chains.

Solar Specialists

If you have doubts about the optimal system, a specialist store is the best place to buy a solar generator.

A specialist store will be able to help you to calculate what your energy demands are.

Help you decide how it can be used and what that implies (main power backup, for use in an RV, or as a genuinely portable solar power supply.)

Find the most suitable model that fits your needs and your available budget.

The price of a solar generator from a specialist store may be slightly higher than one of the larger chains, but at least you have the assurance that you are buying the most suitable unit.

Top Brands & Models

I advise you to choose one of the major established brands with a good reputation so you can get service and spare parts in the future. Brands that I recommend include:

Anker

Bluetti

EcoFlow

Goal Zero

Jackery

Oupes

The following comparisons may be helpful if you find yourself caught between similar models and brands:

Bluetti AC200MAX vs Ecoflow Delta Max

Bluetti AC300 vs Ecoflow Delta Pro

Bluetti AC60 Vs. Jackery 500

Factors To Consider Before Buying

The following guide will help you choose the optimal solar generator.

Power Output

It seems an obvious question to ask; However, you must choose an optimally sized solar generator that caters to the following:

The regular power (watts) required from the system

The surge (startup) power required by appliances using induction motors to operate (fridge-freezers and air-conditioners).

As the power of a solar generator increases, so does the cost and weight.

I suggest you complete a spreadsheet listing all the equipment that will be drawing current from the solar generator and total these up to calculate the required power.

The spreadsheet will include the columns in the summary example shown below.

Appliance

Running watts

Surge Power Watts

When does it run

How long does it run

Fridge

400

1,200

Constantly

Day And Night

15 LED Lights

45

0

At Night

5 Hours

Television

250

0

Intermittently

2 Hours

Total

690

1,200

From this example, the inverter should have the following capacities:

Running power – 1.0Kw (to have power in reserve)

Surge power – 1.2kW

The Battery Capacity

A battery is needed if the system is required when there is no sunlight. The battery capacity is measured in kWh. That is the maximum amount of kilowatts it can provide in one hour, after which it will be discharged.

A 1kWh battery will supply one kW of power for one hour. When sizing the battery, you must consider the battery’s depth of discharge (DOD) percentage.

Most batteries cannot be discharged below the DOD, beyond which they will suffer damage.

The discharge percentages are listed below.

Lead Acid, AGM, and Gel batteries – DOD 50%

Lithium-ion batteries – DOD 15%

This means that the effective capacity of the batteries that advertise 1kWh capacity is as follows:

Lead Acid, AGM, and Gel batteries – 1kWh X 50% = 0.5kwh.

Lithium-ion batteries – 1kWh X (100%-15%) =0.85kWh.

Portability

Small solar generators like the Jackery 500 are the size of a football and only weigh 13.32 lbs. (6.04 kg), which fits the definition of portable.

Mid-sized solar generators push the definition of portable because they weigh in at +- 60lBs. (28 kg). Carrying this weight for a long time will be exceptionally tiring.

Large solar generators are not portable. Although they produce substantial power, they weigh more than 100 lbs.

Price

Price is a huge variable, and whereas a small 500-watt generator may cost between $250 – $500, the largest will set you back between $3,500 for the base unit and up to $20,000 if expansion units and batteries are added.

Key Takeaways

Solar Generators are useful devices and can be purchased from many different outlets. Brands like Bluetti, EcoFlow, Goal Zero, Jackery, and Oupes manufacture reliable and safe solar generators that are fit for purpose.

When buying a solar genny, you must choose a product based on your power needs. It must be sized correctly, have sufficient battery capacity, have the portability you need, and fit into your budget.

Solar generators are often described as being completely silent. This is not strictly true because they have one or more cooling fans controlled by a thermostat and are equipped with warning buzzers to advise when a problem arises.

Solar generators are silent when the cooling fan is not running; while running, they produce approximately 45 dB. Under all circumstances, solar generators are quieter than gas-powered units.

When selecting a solar generator, always size it carefully, opting for more power than you need. Buying a larger inverter than you need will ensure the cooling fan runs less often.

Factors Affecting The Noise Produced By Solar Generators

The design of solar generators makes them inherently quiet. They generally only have one moving part: a cooling fan installed in the inverter housing.

The cooling fan activates on a demand-driven basis and will only run at the necessary speed and duration required for the operating conditions.

The Causes Of Noise Produced By A Solar Generator

The other cause of noise in a solar generator is from one of the warning buzzers that activate when an out-of-normal condition is detected.

The conditions that cause the Solar Powered Generator to produce noise are listed below.

Condition

Cooling Fan

Warning Buzzer

The system is being used to maximize capacity.

When the system is under strain, it generates more heat, and the cooling fan runs at high speed.

If the system has too much current being drawn, a warning buzzer may sound.

The system is receiving high levels of charge.

When the solar panels (or other power sources) charge, it generates more heat, and the cooling fan runs high speed.

If the system overheats, it will activate a warning buzzer.

Battery is discharged

Dependent on the model solar generator a warning buzzer may sound when the batteries are at the minimum charge level.

Using an incorrectly specified battery cable

This may cause the inverter to overheat, activating the cooling fan.

If the battery is below spec, a low-voltage buzzer may sound

The system fails its self-test

Most solar generators perform a self-test to ensure that they are working optimally. If it fails, a buzzer sounds.

There is no input current.

If there is no input current, for some solar generators, a buzzer sounds.

The following will help reduce the number of times the fan switches on:

Install an optimally sized inverter that does not regularly operate beyond 80% capacity.

Use the solar generator in a shady spot with plenty of ventilation.

Use the correct wiring.

Create a sufficiently large battery bank to ensure sufficient current is available to provide power when the sun is not shining.

Do not attempt to power electrical consumers that use more capacity than the inverter is designed for.

Comparing Solar To Traditional Generators

There is no question that solar generators are significantly quieter than traditional generators powered by gas-powered motors.

A comparison of solar and gasoline generators is included in the list below.

Noise Source

Decibel Level (dB)

comment

Aircraft Jet engine producing take-off thrust

150

If you stand close enough, the sound may rupture your ear drum.

Thunderclap

120

This painful noise level will cause serious damage to your ear if you are exposed for long enough. 120dB is 32 times as loud as 70 dB.

A gas-powered lawn mower

100

Ear protection should always be worn to prevent long exposures from causing damage.

A freight train (at 15 meters).

80

80dB is twice as loud as 70 dB.

Gas Powered Generators

60 – 75

Conversation in a crowded place

60

60 dB is only ½ as loud as 70 dB.

The background noise in a quiet suburb.

50

60dB is ¼ of the level of 70 dB.

Solar Powered Generator

45

This is very quiet

The background noise in a Library.

40

40 dB is 1/8th as loud as 70 dB.

Whisper, rustling leaves

20

This is almost as silent and peaceful.

Your own breathing in a quiet place

10

This is barely audible

On average, a solar generator only produces 20% of the noise of a gas-powered generator. In addition, the cooling fan only runs for a proportion of the time, and when it is not running, the unit is silent.

Environmental Impact Of Solar Generators

Solar gennies are significantly more environmentally friendly than gas-powered ones.

Although there is a question mark regarding the manufacture of the batteries, particularly related to the mining of Lithium, once manufactured and installed, they produce no pollution (noise or carbon).

Choosing The Right Solar-Powered Generator

When you select a solar-powered generator, there are several questions that you should answer to ensure you buy a unit that is optimized for your needs.

What Are The Power Requirements?

Carefully consider why you are buying a solar generator and what you need it to run:

Small basic solar generators provide up to 500 watts and are useful for light electrical loads such as LED lights, recharging mobile phones, and running small air cooling fans.

Medium-sized solar generators produce up to 3kW of power and can run larger fans, small fridges, and even air small air conditioners.

Large solar generators can produce up to 15kW of power and have battery capacities that can be increased to 25kWh. These can run almost any household appliance or machine.

How Portable Does The Unit Have To Be?

Portable solar-powered generators are often a misleading term. Generators can weigh anything between 12 lbs. to over 150 lbs. In addition, Lithium-ion batteries need to be treated carefully and cannot be bumped around.

Your Available Budget

The cost of solar generators varies from +-$300.00 to over $20,000 for a fully sized generator producing 15kWs with a 25-kWh battery capacity.

The trick is to match your budget with the degree of portability and size generator that meets your needs.

Batteries are the energy storage component of a solar generator, banking the electricity generated by the solar panel for later use.

There are different types of batteries used in solar generators, including lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries.

Each type has its advantages and disadvantages, such as variations in charging speed, cycle life, and price.

The Inverter

The inverter’s job is to convert the battery’s stored DC electricity into alternating current (AC). AC is the type of electricity that powers most common household devices.

Solar gennies use pure sine wave inverters to ensure the electricity generated is compatible with sensitive electronic devices.

The Charge Controller

The charge controller regulates the flow of electricity between the solar panel, battery, and inverter. It prevents overcharging and ensures efficient performance and battery longevity.

Solar charge controllers are an essential component to maintain the reliability and effectiveness of your solar genny.

How Solar Power Generators Work

Solar-powered generators work by capturing sunlight and converting it into usable energy.

Now, let’s look at each main component discussed above and its role in the process. First, let’s discuss solar panels.

These are critical components in solar generators as they collect sunlight and convert it into electrical energy. They do this through photovoltaic cells, which generate direct current (DC) electricity when exposed to sunlight.

Once the solar panels have generated electricity, it is sent to the charge controller. The primary function of the charge controller is to regulate the power going into the batteries or battery pack. This control helps to prevent overcharging and maximizes the life of your battery storage.

Next, the battery is an essential component of solar generators. It serves as the system’s storage unit, holding the electricity generated by the solar panels for later use. When the sun isn’t shining, the stored energy in the battery can power your devices during periods of low sunlight or nighttime.

After the battery stores the electricity, an inverter converts the DC power from the battery into alternating current (AC) power.

AC power is the standard electricity supply to household appliances and devices. By converting the stored energy into AC power, your solar system can effectively power a wide range of electronic devices and appliances.

As for the power output of a solar generator, it is often measured in watt-hours or kilowatt-hours. This measurement represents the amount of energy the generator can provide over a specific period.

The power output capacity of your genny will depend on the size and efficiency of your solar panels, battery storage, and inverter.

Advantages of Solar-Powered Generators

They provide a clean, renewable energy source that can serve as a reliable backup power option during power outages and emergencies. Plus, their portability allows for easy use while camping, RVing, or living off-grid.

Role of Solar Generators in Power Outages and Emergencies

Solar generators can be critical in providing backup power during outages and emergencies.

Unlike fossil fuel generators that rely on gasoline, diesel, or propane for power, solar means that (as long as there’s sunlight) you’ll have an unlimited energy source to power your lights, charge your devices, and run other essential appliances.

In addition, solar generators produce clean energy, which is better for the environment and won’t contribute to air or noise pollution.

They also typically have lower maintenance costs compared to traditional generators since there are no moving parts or combustion engines involved.

Curious about what devices you can power with a solar generator? Check out what a solar-powered generator can run for more information.

Camping, RV and Off-Grid Living

Whether camping, living in an RV, or residing off-grid, portable solar covers you. Lightweight and compact, these generators can be easily transported to remote locations where grid access is limited or nonexistent.

Many brands, like Goal Zero and EcoFlow, offer USB ports and various battery capacities, allowing you to charge your smartphones, tablets, and laptops with ease. This makes them an ideal companion for outdoor adventures and off-grid living.

Furthermore, since these generators run on sunlight, they’re a sustainable power source while camping or RVing, reducing the reliance on noisy, polluting generators that require fuel.

If you are still wondering if solar generators are any good, then it’s only fair for us to look into their limitation, too.

Limitations of Solar-Powered Generators

While they offer an environmentally friendly and quiet source of energy, they do have some limitations worth considering.

First, you need to know that the recharge time is relatively slow compared to traditional fuel-powered generators. Even on a clear and sunny day, it might take several hours to charge the generator’s batteries fully.

The slow recharge time means that if the battery capacity is depleted, you need to wait before it can provide power again. This is somewhat negated with modern advances allowing you to charge and use them simultaneously. But only select models allow for this.

Then there is the issue of limited power supply. Their capacity heavily depends on the size and efficiency of the solar panels installed.

Generally, they produce less power than their gas or propane counterparts. This limitation could be problematic if you have power-intensive devices that draw power continuously.

One final consideration is limited power capacity compared to fossil fuel counterparts. This limitation restricts the amount of energy that can be stored, potentially leading to insufficient power during extended overcast periods or nighttime when sunlight is unavailable.

Comparison Between Solar Generators and Traditional Generators

Solar generators and traditional generators both serve the purpose of providing electricity when needed. However, there are some distinct differences between the two.

I’ve already discussed how solar works, so I won’t bore you again. But let’s recap traditional gennies.

Fossil fuel generators use gasoline, diesel, or gas to generate electricity. Conventional generators produce emissions and contribute to noise pollution, making them less environmentally friendly.

While they may be more affordable upfront, they require regular maintenance and fuel, resulting in recurring costs source.

Reliability is an important factor to consider when choosing between solar and traditional generators. While solar power is dependent on sunlight, it can be stored in batteries for use during cloudy days or at night. You can improve the overall reliability by correctly sizing your solar generator.

In contrast, traditional generators tend to be more reliable, as they can continuously run as long as they have an adequate fuel supply.

Both types of generators serve their purpose, but the choice ultimately depends on your priorities, budget, and environmental concerns.

If you want more information on the differences between these generators, read this article on solar vs gas generators.
Some solar generators are supplied with built-in solar panels. These tend to be the smaller, lower-powered units. Larger solar-powered generators generally require the solar panels to be purchased separately.

Solar generators provide an environmentally friendly, emissions-free source of electrical power.

Solar generators cost virtually nothing to run and free the owner from constantly increasing gas prices and maintenance costs.

The negative features of solar generators relate to the higher upfront cost, finite battery capacity, and slow time to recharge.

The Benefits Of Solar Generators

The massive switch to electrically powered equipment is driven by the need to reduce the use of carbon-emitting fossil fuels and

Even without the environmental imperatives, several additional benefits are achieved with this new generation of equipment.

Portable generators come in all shapes and sizes; however, as a general rule, they weigh less and are smaller than an equivalent gas-powered generator.

This makes them more portable and easier to carry on holiday.

The biggest difference is that you don’t need to continue purchasing gasoline with a solar-powered generator.

The solar-powered route also offers several options in terms of charging the battery. These include the following:

They can be charged from compatible solar panels.

They can typically be charged from a car lighter socket power supply.

They can be charged from an AC outlet.

They can be charged by another generator (gas or solar).

Another significant benefit is the relatively silent operation of a solar generator compared to the equivalent gas-powered unit.

The noise produced by steel-mounted gas-powered generators averages 75 dB. This compares to solar generators (with cooling fans), producing an average of 45 dB.

To help you understand the noise levels, the following chart shows the typical sound levels produced from various sources.

The “loudness” measured in dBs is not linear and increases by the square for each 10dB increase.

Noise Source

Decibel Level

Comment

Jet take-off (at 25 meters)

150

Eardrum rupture

Aircraft carrier deck

140

Ear protection is essential

Thunderclap

120

Painful. 120dB is 32 times as loud as 70 dB.

power lawn mower

100

The possibility of serious damage is exposed for 8 hrs or more

The freight train (at 15 meters).

80

80dB is twice as loud as 70 dB. Without ear protection, the hearing may be damaged with prolonged exposure.

Gas Powered Generators

75

Conversation in restaurant

60

This is Fairly quiet. 60 dB is only ½ as loud as 70 dB.

Quiet suburb, conversation at home.

50

60dB is ¼ as loud as 70 dB.

Solar Powered Generator

45

This is very quiet

Library, bird calls (44 dB)

40

1/8th is as loud as 70 dB.

Quiet rural area

30

1/16th as loud as 70 dB. And it is very quiet.

Whisper, rustling leaves

20

Breathing

10

Barely audible

This means that a solar generator can be run unobtrusively without disturbing the peace of an area. Suitable for RV camping trips or during those quiet evening fishing times when peace is so important.

Solar Generators Have Fewer Failure Points

Gas-powered generators need regular maintenance work to keep operating efficiently. Typical failure points on a gas-powered generator include:

The Fuel system is damaged, leaks, or is blocked.

The air intake system becomes constrained.

The Starter pulley breaks, and/or the starter motor becomes damaged.

The lead acid starter battery requires renewal.

By comparison, the cooling fan in a solar generator is the only moving part of the device. This reduces the number of mechanical failure points in the unit and reduces the need to maintain it.

The Downsides of Solar Generators

There are a few downsides to solar generators, which are listed below.

Higher Upfront Costs

Solar generators are available in all shapes and sizes, from a small unit that produces ½ kW of AC power to large and heavy units that make over 10kW.

The prices range accordingly and can be purchased for as low as $500 for the Jackery 500 and Goal Zero 500X to $4,000 for a BLUETTI AC300 or EcoFlow Delta Pro.

The upfront cost is higher than an equivalent gas-powered generator. But long-term costs are lower.

Weather Dependent

The main downside of a solar generator is that if you want to use solar panels to charge the battery, you need sufficient sun shining on the solar panels.

Solar panels’ electricity production is compromised in overcast weather and at night.

The good news is that most devices offer several different recharging methods, including the following:

Solar panels.

An AC power supply

DC powers supply from a car.

Current from another generator.

More expensive solar generators will accept a simultaneous charge from an AC and solar panel source. The combined power reduces recharging times significantly.

Take Longer To Recharge

Unfortunately, recharging is a longer process than refueling the gas tank on a gas-powered generator.

Charging times can take anywhere between an hour and a complete day, although most solar generators can still produce power while connected to solar panels.

As discussed, some of the larger, more capable solar generators can be charged from solar and AC power simultaneously, reducing the time it takes to recharge.

Limited Power Capacity

There are two power constraints associated with solar generators:

Maximum kW power output.

The kWh capacity of the batteries.

The maximum power output of the unit will determine the combination and power requirements of the appliances that can run at any time.

A system producing 2 kW of power can provide power appliances that (accumulated) do not draw more than 2 kW.

The battery capacity will determine how long those devices can be run. A battery with a 3 kWh capacity can run these devices (2 kW) for 1 ½ hours.

Gas generators have the same two restrictions maximum power restrictions. The difference is that when a gas-powered generator runs out of gas, the gas tank can be refilled much faster.

Less Durable

Lithium-ion batteries (which most solar generators use) have many benefits for a solar generator; however, their downside is that they do not cope with rough treatment.

Additionally, housings contain many delicate electrical components, meaning they must be treated more gently.

Most solar generators are not waterproof or dustproof, which means they will be damaged if exposed. So, they are less suited to harsh environments (such as building sites).

Comparing Solar Generators To Traditional Ones

Solar generators compete with traditional gas-powered units. The comparison of each type is listed below.

Portable Solar Generators

Portable Traditional Generators

Fuel (Energy Source) to refill (recharge)

Solar, AC. DC or other generators

Gasoline

Regular Maintenance

Minimal

Comprehensive

Waterproof

Most models are NOT waterproof

It can be used in rainy weather

Up Front Cost

$500 to $4,000

$200 to $3,000

Running Costs

Insignificant

Running costs determined by Gas PricesOil PricesMaintenance costs

Maximum Power

+10kW

+10kW

Time To Recharge (Refill)

½ to 24 hours, depending on size and model

Immediately

Noise Generated

45dB.

75dB.

Environmental Impact

Only at manufacture and disposal

Heavy impact

Ideal Usage Environment

Remote use at home or holiday

Construction sites with a need for readily available electrical power. Gas-powered generators also handle rough treatment better.

Rebates and Incentives

The federal government and many utilities offer rebates for solar generators with a power supply of 3kW or higher.

No rebates – Regulatory bodies are incentivizing gas-powered generator replacement.

The technology that drives solar-powered generators is continually advancing, and they are beginning to represent a real alternative to gas-powered devices.

Several advantages of solar-powered generators include quiet running, zero emissions, minimal running or maintenance costs, and good portability.

They also do not restrict the charging methods to only solar power; most models can also be charged from an AC socket or a car cigarette lighter socket.

The cons of solar generators focus on the higher purchase cost, the limited available battery capacities, and the long time it takes to recharge the batteries.

A portable solar generator is a device that converts sunlight into electricity. It takes energy stored in a battery or uses it directly to power small electronic devices, making them eco-friendly and silent.

They are popular for outdoor activities, emergency preparedness, and off-grid living due to their multiple outlets, USB ports, and portability.

Having a backup power source is crucial, whether connected to the grid or not. Portable solar generators provide a quieter and more sustainable alternative to traditional gas-powered ones.

Understanding solar technology can be challenging, but I’ll simplify it for you in this article.

How Portable Solar Generators Work?

Portable solar generators have the same key components that you find in home PV systems.

1⃣ First up, there’s the solar panel. Solar panels work by converting sunlight into electricity. It comprises many photovoltaic cells that transform energy from the sun into direct current (DC) electricity.

2⃣ Then there’s the battery bank, like a big rechargeable battery that stores all that DC electricity until you need it.

The bigger the battery bank, the more energy you can store and the longer you can use it. The battery enables you to use the power at night or whenever the generator is not receiving sunlight.

3⃣ Next, the inverter converts all that DC electricity/energy stored in the bank and converts it into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is what your devices run off.

4⃣ And finally, there are the ports and outlets. These are what you use to connect your devices to the generator.

They’ve got USB ports for your phone, AC outlets for your laptop, and even 12V ports for your car fridge. It’s like a little power hub that keeps all your gear up and ready to roll.

For a deep dive into each of these steps, I’ve written an entire article explaining how portable solar generators work.

Benefits of Using a Portable Solar Generator

So, what are the benefits of using a portable power station? Well, that depends on what you are using the generator for and in what conditions you are using it. That said, here are a few advantages and benefits:

Clean and Renewable Energy: Most generators use fossil fuels, which harms the environment. Well, solar generators are different because they use the sun’s energy to generate clean energy.

Portability and Convenience: Picture this: you’re out in the middle of nowhere, but you need to power your mobile phone and charge your laptop. What do you do? Well, bust out your trusty portable solar generator, which is designed to be easy to move around and take wherever you go.

Cost Savings: Admittedly, solar generators have a high upfront cost, but they can save on electricity bills over time and reduce reliance on traditional power sources, benefiting your wallet and the environment.

Quiet Operation: Unlike those obnoxious traditional gas generators, they are super quiet and don’t emit any pollution. They’re like the library of power sources – perfect for use in quiet outdoor settings or situations where noise and emissions are a no-go.

Low Maintenance: These generators require little maintenance beyond the basic cleaning and upkeep now and then. They are like the “set it and forget it” of power sources. So, you can spend less time tinkering and more time enjoying the great outdoors.

If it sounds like I am a fan, it is because I am. They have a lot of benefits, and even if you feel like you do not need one, they are fantastic to have around.

Limitations of Portable Solar Generators

It is all too easy to discuss the benefits. However, what about their limitations? Perhaps they are not the correct type of power source for you. Well, let’s take a look:

Limited Power Output: They might not be able to handle all your power-hungry gadgets, so you have to choose which ones you want to keep alive.

Weather-Dependent: Solar runs on sunshine, so your power supply will too if the sun’s hiding behind the clouds. That said, solar panels are becoming more efficient.

Limited Battery Capacity: These generators can’t hold a ton of juice in their batteries, so you must be careful about how much power you are taking out of them.

Slow Charging Time: Unlike traditional gasoline generators, they can take their sweet time soaking up the sun’s rays and charging their batteries.

Initial Cost: These machines don’t come cheap, but you might be able to save some dough on your energy bill in the long run.

The limitations should be another factor regarding whether you get a portable solar generator. Gas-powered generators are reliable, on-demand power (as long as you keep the gas tank filled). Consider the benefits and drawbacks of the solar or gas generator debate.

Types of Portable Solar Generators

Alright, you are considering getting a portable solar generator but are unsure which type to get. Well, there are several different types of portable solar generators on the market. Each of these has its features and benefits. Hopefully, this section helps you decide which is best for you.

Different Types Of Portable Solar Generators

Solar Generator

Description

All-in-one solar generators

All-in-one solar generators are like little power stations you can take anywhere. These generators usually come with a built-in battery, solar panels, and different ports and outlets to charge up all your gadgets and gizmos on the go.

Solar Briefcase

The solar briefcase is a foldable solar panel built into a suitcase. These are super convenient if you’re traveling or camping and need a compact, portable power source. Also, many trade workers, such as electricians, use them on-site.

Solar panels only

Portable solar panels can be hooked up to a separate battery or power bank. These are great if you already have a battery or want more flexibility in using your solar power. You can just lay the panels out in the sun and let them do their thing.

Foldable panels

Foldable solar panels, similar to the portable ones but foldable. Because they can be folded, taking them with you in your vehicle is convenient, and they do not take up too much space.

What Size Portable Solar Generator Do You Need?

Well, the sizing of a solar generator depends on a few factors, such as:

What are you trying to power?

How long do you need to power it?

What is your budget?

For camping trips, a 300 to 500-watt generator should be fine unless you want to keep your TV running at night while camping.

If you want to power small appliances at home, such as the lights, TV, Wi-Fi router, and other stuff, try getting a 3000W generator.

However, it will not see you through the night until the morning. So, for anything else, look at getting a 5000W generator.

Remember that portable solar generators are intended for emergency power situations and should not be considered a primary power source.

Finally, if the generator is used for medical equipment, like an oxygen concentrator, I advise getting the biggest one you can afford.

Cost of Portable Solar Generators

Well, it depends. There are many different types, and the price can vary depending on what you’re looking for. Here are a few examples:

All-in-one solar generators: $300-$5,000

Portable solar panels: $50-$300

Foldable solar panels: $50-$500

Solar briefcases: $100-$1,000

One thing that we also need to consider is the quality. You can find cheap models that seem enticing online, but you get what you pay for. So, do your research and buy from reputable brands and outlets to avoid buyer’s remorse.

Maintenance Requirements

Maintenance is minimal for this type of generator. Here are six easy steps to keep your unit maintained

Keep them clean: You don’t want your solar panels getting all gunked up with dirt and dust, so be sure to wipe them down with a soft cloth or brush occasionally.

Don’t overcharge it: Don’t leave your generator plugged in for too long, or you might damage the battery. Instead, only charge solar batteries for the recommended time and then unplug them.

Store it somewhere safe: Keep it in a cool, dry place when not in use and learn how to secure solar panels against theft to protect your investment.

Use regularly: Keep your generator in tip-top shape by running it often. Even if you’re not powering anything with it, give it a little sunbath now and then to keep the battery healthy.

Keep the generator away from extreme temperatures: Your generator, specifically the batteries, doesn’t like it too hot or cold, so try to keep it somewhere with a moderate temperature. Don’t leave it in a hot car!

Use the right cords and adapters: Ensure you use the right cables and adapters when connecting your devices to the generator.

There you have it! Follow these simple tips, and you should be able to keep your generator in good working order for a long while.

Are Portable Solar Generators Suitable For Off-Grid Living?

Whether or not a portable solar backup is enough for off-grid living depends on various factors, such as how much power you need, how often you will be using it, and what other sources of energy you have available.

If you are trying to go off the grid, I would advise having a mobile generator as a backup plan.

For example, say your main solar power system is running low, and you need to charge your laptop, watch TV, or anything like that; you can do it.

Also, consider your location and how much sunlight you can access. It may not be enough to meet your energy needs if you live in an area with many cloudy days or long stretches of darkness.

Frequently Asked

Do Solar Power Generators Really Work?

During the day, a portable solar generator can generate power consistently and efficiently. However, its battery’s capacity will determine what it can power and how long, especially at night.

Solar generators work, and they are excellent devices to have provided you know how to use them and how to take care of them.

Key Takeaways

Portable solar generators should not be used as a primary source to power your home.

Solar generators typically come in 300W to 5000W capacities. The size you should get depends on your needs.

Portable generators use the same concept as any solar power system, except they’re much smaller and can be taken anywhere.

Portable solar generators are a must-have for anyone living off the grid, but they should be a supplemental backup source.

The market for solar generators is flooded with choice. Which is great for us as consumers but also leaves a high chance of buyer’s remorse.

This article covers the best portable solar generators currently on offer by grouping them into categories such as camping, road trips, and power outage emergencies at home.

If you are unsure about which you need, then knowing what a solar-powered generator can run will help you refine your search. Let’s start with the best overall, the Jackery 2000 Plus!

The Jackery Solar Generator 2000 Plus 200W is an impressive piece of equipment that we’ve recently tested. With its massive 2042.8Wh capacity and 3000W output, it can power heavy-duty devices and appliances without breaking a sweat.

Apart from being perfect for outdoor adventures, it’s also a reliable backup power source for home use during unexpected outages or emergencies.

One of its standout features is the ultra-fast charging. We were amazed that it took only 2 hours to fully charge the unit by connecting it to 6 SolarSaga 200W solar panels or wall outlets. Considering its large capacity, this makes for efficient and convenient use, especially when on the go.

What sets the Jackery 2000 Plus apart is its expandability. It supports up to five additional battery packs, increasing the total capacity from 2kWh to 12kWh.

Moreover, by connecting two Jackery 2000 Plus units in parallel, you can expand the capacity to 24kWh and enjoy 240V voltage and 6000W total output.

However, there are a few downsides to consider. Firstly, the unit weighs 79.1 pounds, making it less portable than other options on the market. Also, being a premium product, the initial investment might be relatively high. Lastly, though it charges quickly, you may need to add extra solar panels to achieve optimal charging times.

Best Overall: An excellent investment for those seeking a powerful and expandable solar generator. Its fast charging, huge capacity, and expandability make it a top choice for outdoor explorers and homeowners needing a reliable backup power source.

We recently tried out the Goal Zero Yeti 200X portable power station, and it truly delivers on its lightweight and compact design promise. With 187Wh capacity, this solar generator, accompanied by the foldable Nomad 20 solar panel, is an exceptional choice for home use or camping trips.

One of the aspects we liked the most about the Yeti 200X was its versatility. The power station comes with 4 different port options, including 12V and USB PD, allowing us to charge our smartphones, laptops, tablets and even power some small appliances. We found it quite convenient to have so many charging options, making our experience hassle-free.

When we tested the high-speed charging capabilities of the Yeti 200X, we were not disappointed. The USB-C PD fast charging port quickly charged our devices such as laptops, tablets, and phones.

We also tried charging the power station using the Nomad 20 solar panel, the included 60-watt power supply, and even our vehicle’s 12-volt outlet, giving us various ways to recharge while on the go.

However, we noticed some shortcomings as well, such as the issue with charging the power station, and in some cases, others have claimed it stopped charging after a few weeks of light use.

The solar panel’s power output might need to be increased for larger devices, and users reported the panel worked well mostly for mobile phones. Additionally, be aware of the return shipping cost for defective units, as it can be expensive.

Best Budget: A solid choice for those seeking a lightweight, versatile, and portable solar generator for home emergencies or outdoor adventures. It might not be suitable for larger devices, and there are reported charging issues, but overall, it’s a great addition to your outdoor lifestyle.

During a weekend camping trip, we recently used the Goal Zero Yeti 3000X Portable Power Station and were impressed with its consistent high power output.

It kept our devices charged and even powered a mini-refrigerator without any issues. The various output ports were convenient, allowing us to connect multiple devices simultaneously.

One thing we noticed, however, was the weight of the unit. At 42 pounds, moving can be cumbersome, especially for longer distances. We recommend planning for transport to avoid straining yourself.

Despite its weight, the Goal Zero Yeti 3000X has a durable and robust design, showcasing its quality and value.

We recently had the opportunity to use the AC180 with a PV120 solar panel for a weekend road trip.

The included solar panel kit allowed us to quickly charge the 1152Wh power station during the day, giving us ample power to run our devices.

The power station boasts an impressive 1800W output with 11 outlets, allowing us to charge and power multiple devices simultaneously. What we liked even more was the ability to use the BLUETTI App to boost the power to 2700W for our higher needs.

Weighing in at 37.4 pounds, it’s a bit hefty to carry around, but it’s manageable. Be aware that some users experienced radio frequency interference when using the generator for amateur radio equipment.

Also, one aspect we found strange is that the solar panels might be shipped separately, causing potential confusion upon delivery.

Best for Weekends Away: Apart from these minor drawbacks, the unit proved to be a reliable and eco-friendly portable power source, especially for outdoor use.
Buying Guide

When choosing a portable solar generator, several key factors should be considered. This buying guide covers important features to help you make an informed decision. Remember, no single generator will be perfect for everyone, so weigh each feature against your specific needs.

Capacity and Power Output

The capacity and power output of a solar generator are crucial factors. Generators come in various sizes with different wattage capacities.

Make sure to choose one that can handle your power needs, whether it’s for charging electronics or running appliances.

Look for generators with higher watt-hours (Wh) for longer run times and higher maximum wattage for handling larger appliances.

Portability and Weight

A major advantage of portable solar generators is their ability to be moved and transported easily.

Consider the overall size, weight, and any integrated features like handles or wheels to help you assess the generator’s portability.

Heavier units without these features will be more challenging to transport, especially if you plan to take them camping or utilize them during emergencies.

Solar Panel Compatibility

Ensure the generator you choose is compatible with various types of solar panels, including monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film panels.

Compatibility is important, as it allows you to expand your setup with different panels over time, optimizing charging efficiency and granting more flexibility.

Battery Type and Life

The type and lifespan of your generator’s battery play a crucial role in overall performance. There are typically two battery types in solar generators: lead-acid and lithium-ion.

Lead-acid batteries tend to be heavier and have shorter lifespans, while lithium-ion batteries are lighter, more efficient, and have longer lifespans.

Consider the battery’s expected cycles and replacement costs when making your decision.

Charging Options and Input Ports

In addition to solar charging, having multiple charging options with your generator is helpful.

Alternatives such as AC wall charging or car charging can be invaluable during extended periods of limited sun exposure.

Furthermore, look for generators that offer multiple input ports, such as USB, AC, and DC, to accommodate various devices and appliances.

By considering these factors, you can make a well-informed decision when purchasing a portable solar generator that meets your specific needs.

Solar-powered generators transform sunlight into electricity, suitable for powering a range of devices from LED lights, mobile phones, and laptops to larger appliances like refrigerators and medical equipment such as CPAP machines.

It’s crucial to match the device’s wattage with the generator’s output, remembering that some devices have a higher starting (surge) wattage.

The effectiveness of these generators hinges on their battery storage and the available sunlight, so having a backup power source is advisable.

At Bloom Centre, we primarily promote portable solar solutions, but it’s valuable to understand the differences between solar and gas generators. Now, let’s explore various solar generator types.

Key Takeaways

Solar gennies are versatile and serve various purposes, from charging phones to powering homes.

Some solar generators provide backup for essentials, while others fully power off-grid properties.

Some are portable, and others are permanently connected to building circuits.

Before purchasing a solar generator, decide its purpose and power requirements.

Types Of Solar Generators

The difference between the various systems relates to whether the system is permanently installed or whether it is a portable solar generator and the amount of power it supplies. Four levels of capability are available:

Portable backup for essential equipment

Complete backup systems

Grid Tied Systems

Off-grid systems

Portable Backup For Essential Equipment

Portable solar generators range in size from small 3-watt panels that can be used to charge a cell phone to much larger units that can run complete backup systems.

The chief characteristic of this equipment is that it is fully mobile and can be used on-site (at home) or off-site (camping trips or work sites).

Some units have storage batteries that can be concurrently charged by the solar panels while being used.

Complete Backup Solar Generator Systems

A full backup system is a system that is wired into the home and can be used as emergency power to keep the home running when there is a break in the utility power supply.

It activates it automatically when the main power supply is interrupted. The system comprises of an inverter, charge controller, solar battery, and solar panels.

Grid-Tied Solar Generator Systems

Grid-tied systems are an expansion of the previously described backup systems. These are generally used as the house’s electrical supply and are designed to power a household.

If the solar equipment is compromised (by insufficient sunlight), the system makes up the difference from the utility power supply.

If the system produces an excess of current and the state (utility) has a net metering program, the excess current is fed back to the utility, which pays an agreed rate for it.

The system comprises an inverter, solar battery, and solar panels.

Off-Grid Solar Generator System

These systems’ power properties are not connected to the utility grid. By necessity, they are generally larger than the other system types, particularly in battery storage capacity.

Power Output Of Solar Generators

When you start researching solar generators, you will be bombarded with terms you may not be familiar with.

The main terms used to describe the system’s capability are listed below.

Volts (Voltage)

Amps (Amperage)

Watts (Wattage)

Kilowatts (kW)

Watt Hours

Kilowatt Hours (kWh)

Volts (Voltage)

The electrical current moves from the power supply’s negative terminal (pole) to the positive.

The voltage is the amount of energy available to move the current in the circuit.

If you consider the water behind a dam wall. Voltage is similar to the effect of gravity on the water at the top of a waterfall.

Before the water begins to fall, it only has potential energy. It is the equivalent of voltage.

The force of gravity determines how much and how fast the water falls down. The bottom of the waterfall represents the electrical circuit’s positive terminal.

When the gate is opened, it is the same as pressing the on/off switch in an electrical circuit. If the water falls over a water turbine, it will turn it, and so start to do “work.”

The effect of the turbine will be to slow the water down, reducing the speed at which it hits the ground. This is because some of the water’s energy has been transferred to the turbine.

In the same way, if a light is inserted into a circuit, the voltage is converted into heat and lights the bulb’s filament.

Amps (Amperage)

An ammeter (a device used to measure amperage) measures the speed of the electrical current (electrons) passing a fixed point in the circuit.

One ampere equals one coulomb of electrical current passing a given point per second. One coulomb consists of 6.242 x 10^18 electrons.

Let’s use an example from road traffic. A single road can carry a certain number of vehicles. If the number of cars increases, a traffic jam will occur.

The same applies to a circuit. If the number of amps (coulombs) increases beyond the circuit’s capacity, the wire will heat up and may start a fire.

Watts (Wattage)

The watts are the “pressure” produced by the energy source. Using the road traffic example, if the road is widened, the same number of cars may still travel on the road, but the “pressure” will be reduced.

Similarly, if roadworks are on a 2 lane road and one lane is closed off, the same number of cars may travel through, but the “pressure” increases.

If the voltage (the number of cars) is reduced, or the cars slow down (amps,) the pressure (watts) in the system is reduced.

Kilowatts (kW)

Kilowatts is a simple way to describe 1,000 watts. Therefore 1,000 watts is described as 1 kilowatt (kW.)

Watt Hour

Watt-hour refers to two measures:

It represents the maximum number of watts the battery can provide in 1 hour.

In electrical consumers, it represents the number of watts a component uses in an hour.

Kilowatt Hours (kWh)

Kilowatt-hours is watt-hours multiplied by 1,000.

A 2kWh battery can power a 1kWh appliance for 2 hours.

Types Of Appliances And Electronics That a Solar Generator Can Run

The size of the solar generator determines the type of appliances that can be run. The metrics above will be used when determining what equipment they can power.

Small Appliances and Devices

Solar generators easily power small devices such as laptops and cell phones. In most instances, they only need a 110-120V (In North America) power supply and have a very low wattage need.

Larger Appliances

Using a solar generator to run Refrigerators, air conditioners, and other larger appliances presents challenges.

Although they run on a standard voltage, they require more watts. They use induction motors that require a quick burst of additional power (surge) to make the motor move.

The induction motor’s surge requirements range between 1.5 to 3 times the normal power consumption. A fridge running on a 400-watt system may require 1.2kW to start moving.

You need to know what size solar generator you need to enable this. Some of the power tools, devices, and appliances that use induction motors include the following:

Fridges & freezers

Air Conditioners

Angle Grinders

Table Saws

Borehole pumps (Drilled well)

Pressure pumps

Very High Consumption Equipment

Solar generators can power all equipment, even those wired for three phase supply, if the solar generator is suitably equipped.

If you need to power a typical four-plate stove and oven, it can consume up to 8 kWh of electricity. A properly sized generator can supply this power efficiently.

This poses the question of if it’s a worthwhile investment, requiring more batteries and a higher-capacity inverter to provide more power. These are the two highest-cost items in a solar system.

A more cost-effective method may be to switch the electric stove to gas.

Maximum Power Load Of Solar Generators

The maximum power load of a solar generator is defined by the number of watts the generator can provide simultaneously.

The inverter will trip if the equipment connected to the solar generator’s inverter attempts to draw more watts than the maximum power load capacity.

This is particularly problematic for equipment that requires a surge current to start.

Factors Affecting Solar Generator Efficiency

The four primary components of a solar generator are listed below.

The Solar Panels

Solar panels convert sunlight into electrical energy. The solar panels generate a DC current sent to the charge controller in the inverter.

The number and capacity of the panels must be sufficient to recharge the battery in a predefined time span on a sunny day.

The system’s needs determine the panel size (inches) and output (watts).

Battery Capacity

The capacity of the battery is defined in kilowatts and kilowatt hours. This determines how long the system can provide power without sunlight.

Inverter

The DC from the battery is converted to AC power by the charger. The inverter connects the system to the home electrical system.

The Charge Converter

The charge converter connects the solar panels to the battery and ensures that the batteries are not overloaded or overcharged.

In bigger systems, the charge converter is housed in the inverter box.

Environmental Factors

The typical weather patterns at the solar generator’s location will determine how much power the system can provide.

Areas at the equator, with ample sunlight, will require fewer panels to provide an equivalent level of power as systems in the northern hemisphere with continuous cloud cover.

Choosing A Solar Generator

Choosing the optimal solar generator will be determined by the following:

Power Needs

How much power you need – this includes how much continuous and surge power is needed. A useful exercise is listing all the appliances and their continuous and surge power requirements.

Work out the watts used by the appliances you want to run concurrently and check the power needed.

Budget

It is possible to spend thousands of dollars on a system. My recommendation is to size the system, purchase the one that comfortably meets your needs, and then add additional capacity (batteries, solar panels) as required. To help you out, this article on the best portable solar generators is a great start.
