BLOOM Clean Technology Demonstration Program – Round 2 Projects Announced

BLOOM Clean Technology Demonstration Program – Round 2 Projects Announced

BLOOM is pleased to announce that grant funding has been approved to support the completion of six clean technology demonstration projects. The projects are diverse and represent key sectors of Ontario’s economy.

The demonstrations are unique collaborative projects involving both a cleantech solution provider and an end-use customer ‘host’ who is representative of the broader sector. In addition, each project includes other strategic partners to support the roll-out and market adoption of the low-carbon cleantech solution following completion of the demonstration.

The following six demonstration projects are being supported:

  • Sojourn Labs and University of Toronto Transportation Services – A mix of new and sustainable solutions for urban transportation are being developed globally. This project will demonstrate the performance of ‘the Arc’ – a 3-wheel electric vehicle designed to provide individual and commercial users with convenient, congestion-free urban mobility to reduce emissions and improve road and pedestrian safety.
  • Carbon Cap and O’Shanter Company Developments – Venting excess heat into the atmosphere is a wasted resource. This project will demonstrate the performance of an innovative ‘flue gas recovery’ system to retrofit natural gas boilers in existing multi-
    residential buildings to recover lost heat, and improve the heating and hot water platform to lower building operation costs and carbon emissions.
  • Enersion and Canada15Edge Data Centers – This project is a practical example of converting an existing problem into a future benefit. It will demonstrate how an ‘adsorption chiller’ can reduce electricity demand by cost-effectively utilizing the low-grade residual heat generated by the IT equipment, to provide the stringent 24/7 cooling needs of data centers while also reducing costs and carbon emissions.
  • Food Cycle Science and Farm Boy – As a way to extract lost value from waste, this project will show how a small footprint, on-site system can process organic food waste at grocery retailers to reduce handling, storage and transportation costs – while producing an end-product with beneficial nutrient and fertilizer properties.
  • SensorSuite and Timbercreek Communities – This demonstration will apply sophisticated machine learning algorithms and a cloud-based enterprise-level solution, to optimize boiler performance and reduce heating and domestic hot water costs in
    multi-residential buildings.
  • Milinator Technologies and Huitema Farm – Based on a concept developed for space travel, this project will demonstrate the use of ‘fly larvae’ to convert on-farm generated chicken manure into a chemical-free organic fertilizer and protein rich feed product.

The outcomes and results of the demonstration projects will be used to:

  • Inform sector stakeholders that viable cleantech and low carbon solutions are commercially available;
  • Reduce the perceived environmental, economic, and business risks of adopting cleantech solutions;
  • Bridge the ‘adoption gap’ and increase the market demand for cleantech solutions; and
  • Quantify the economic, GHG emission reduction and other environmental and societal benefits from the widespread adoption of cleantech solutions in Ontario.

All of the cleantech demonstration projects are to be completed by March 31, 2019.
